Michelle Ainsworth, Therapist/ Counsellor Rooted in compassion. Growing through change.
Life can feel overwhelming when you’re carrying anxiety, trauma, grief, relationship challenges, addiction, anger, burnout, or simply trying to navigate a world that doesn’t always understand you. You don’t have to do it alone.
With more than 25 years of experience supporting individuals, couples, and families, I provide a warm, practical, and non-judgmental space where you can feel genuinely heard and accepted. My approach is collaborative, compassionate, and focused on helping you build meaningful, lasting change at a pace that feels right for you.
I have a special interest in working with:
Autism and ADHD (late diagnosis, masking, burnout, executive functioning) Anxiety and depression Trauma and PTSD Grief and loss Addiction and recovery Anger management and emotional regulation Couples and relationship challenges Life transitions and caregiver stress Individuals and families navigating the child welfare system My practice is neurodiversity-affirming, trauma-informed, and grounded in evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Internal Family Systems (IFS)-informed therapy, mindfulness-based approaches, narrative therapy, and Gottman Method principles for couples.
I have extensive experience helping individuals understand and manage anger in healthy, constructive ways. Together, we work to identify the underlying emotions driving anger, strengthen emotional regulation skills, improve communication, and develop practical strategies that foster healthier relationships and lasting change.
In addition to individual and couples counselling, I facilitate DBT skills groups and teach Mindfulness and Art Therapy programs, creating supportive spaces where participants can develop practical coping strategies, strengthen emotional regulation, build resilience, and connect with others through experiential learning. I also offer workshops and psychoeducational groups focused on mindfulness, emotional wellness, and personal growth.
I believe that healing happens not only through therapy but also through connection and community. Throughout my career, I have been actively involved in community mental health initiatives and have been honoured to receive awards recognizing my commitment to supporting individuals, families, and the communities I serve.
At Northern Roots Counselling, I believe healing happens through genuine connection, self-understanding, and creating practical strategies that fit your real life. My goal is to create a space where you feel safe, respected, and empowered to move toward the life you want to live. Whether you’re seeking support for yourself, your relationship, or your family, we’ll work together to identify your strengths, navigate life’s challenges, and foster meaningful, lasting change.
In-person and secure online counselling sessions are offered for adults, older teens, and couples across Ontario, providing flexible options to access support in the way that works best for you.
I look forward to walking alongside you on your journey toward healing and growth.
